This is the cattleya orchid that has a lot of pseudobulbs and ready for cutting. First, you have to prepare a clean sharp blade and melted candle wax or cinnamon powder (in Thailand we usually use “Poon Daeng”. Its properties is good like melted candle wax or cinnamon powder)

Remove medium and cut off roots. You do not have to worry for the roots! It will make new roots again but if you do not cut off roots, the roots may be infect and make your orchid rot and die.

Cut the pseudobulbs with the clean sharp blade at least 3 bulbs per 1 piece. Then seal the cuts with melted candle wax or cinnamon powder to prevent bacterial infection.

After that, you can plant it immediately or left it 2-3 days and plant it when you want.

The time period best for cutting orchids is may-july because this time the orchids make new roots very fast and growing very well.

    Hi,

Happy the New Year. Please help me..
I have a cattleya which perhaps it is a cutting and its roots are almost dry.
Can I cut the dry roots and pot the plant in a new medium? Now I have it in chips of fir bark. What is the best medium to pot a cutting?

    Go raibh maith agat

    Hello,
I’m fine and hope youre fine too :)
About the cattleya plant,I suggest you cut all roots and rotten bulbs off and seal the cuts with melted candle wax or cinnamon powder to prevent bacterial infection. The best medium I want to suggest you is coconut bark because it can make your plant make new roots as fast.(the coconut bark can keep the moisture as well)
I will write a new article about this soon.

  4. Thanks a lot for your information. I had a very old cattaleya given to me and it had a piece of nylon window screening wrapped around the root system. I have used your method of re-potting and feel much more secure in my propagation. – Darlene
